Dental Health As We Age

As we age, our oral health becomes even more important. There are many complications that can arise from poor oral health in older adults. Older adults are more prone to get cavities and periodontitis, a serious gum infection. Periodontitis is associated with an increase of medical conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. We have a ton of bacteria in our mouths and if you do not have proper oral hygiene, this bacteria can be released into our bloodstream, which can lead to infection in your body.

Older adults are at risk of infection, if they do not have good oral hygiene, use fluoride and see their dentist on a regular basis. Tooth loss can affect chewing and therefore, may lead to malnutrition. If you have chronic oral infections, this can lead to heart disease and can lead to the spreading of the infection to artificial joints and endocardial implants.

Patients with dementia may neglect their oral health and do not get the proper oral care. People in nursing homes might not receive adequate dental care and therefore, nursing homes should adopt policies to identify patients at high risk for poor oral hygiene. Most experts recommend that all older adults have biannual dental cleanings. Your mouth is a mirror to your body and it can show how healthy or unhealthy you are.

If you are an older adult or have an older adult in your life, you should go for regular dental exams and take good care of your oral health. Call today to schedule your appointment.
